... Freeze warning remains in effect from 3 am to 8 am akdt
Wednesday...

* location... portions of Anchorage and the Matanuska Valley.

* Temperatures... upper 20s to lower 30s.

* Timing... temperatures will drop below freezing early Wednesday
morning. The coldest temperatures and longest duration of sub-
freezing temperatures will be from east Anchorage northward to
The Eagle River Valley and from Wasilla westward in the
Matanuska Valley.

* Impacts... sensitive outdoor plants and other vegetation may be
damaged or killed by cold temperatures if left unprotected.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A freeze warning means sub-freezing temperatures are imminent or
highly likely. These conditions will kill crops and other
sensitive vegetation.

Since the period of record began in 1952... the normal average
temperature for August is 56.8 degrees. August 2015 was the 5th
warmest August of record with an average temperature of 58.9
degrees.

On average... August has 3 days when high temperatures reach 70
degrees or greater. This August had 11 days with a high
temperature at or above 70 degrees. 2015 has the third most 70
degree days in August... behind 2004 with 18 days and 1978 with 16
days.

August ended with a 4 day streak of below average temperatures.
This is the first time there have been 4 consecutive days of below
normal temperatures since March 12-15.

August 2015 recorded 8 cooling degree days... which is a new record
for the greatest number of cooling degree days in August in the
period of record. The previous record was 7 cooling degree days
set in 1978.
