... NWS Atlanta to conduct damage surveys today...

Two teams from the National Weather Service will be out today to
survey damage from storms that occurred on Wednesday may 25. One
team will be headed to north GA to Whitfield... Gordon... and Gilmer
counties. The second team will be headed south to look at known damage
in Laurens County and investigate potential tracks in Laurens and
Bleckley counties. Other possible locations inlclude known damage
in Toombs and Montgomery counties.

For information on the status of the surveys... NWS Atlanta will
relay the latest via nwschat and official findings will be
published in a public information statement when the surveys are
concluded.

... NWS damage survey for 5/23/17 tornado event...


.Overview...
Several severe storms developed around midday associated with
a strong storm system and produced at least 3 tornadoes. Two
of the three tornadoes are documented below. Any subsequent
tornadoes are awaiting further information before being
documented.

.Crisp County tornado...

start time: 146 PM EDT
start location: 2.3 mi north of Arabi
start lat/lon: 31.8667 / -83.7481

End date: may 23 2017
end time: 154 PM EDT
end location: 5.6 mi northeast of Arabi
end lat/lon: 31.8788 / -83.6603

Survey summary: this tornado began just south of Highway 41
and landfill Road and intensified quickly as it crossed I-75,
blowing down a semi tractor-trailer onto a car both traveling
in the southbound lanes resulting in two minor injuries.
Numerous trees were snapped as it continued east-northeast.
As the tornado reached its maximum intensity of 110 mph, a
house had most of its roof blown off at the 200 block of
allied Rd and a Mobile home across the street was blown
off its blocks. The Mobile home residents had sought shelter
in the home across the street several minutes before the
tornado hit and were not injured in spite of the extensive
damage. Near Arabi Wilford Rd and Highway 90 another Mobile
home was blown off its blocks but remained upright. Dozens of
trees were snapped or uprooted one falling on a home causing
minor damage. The tornado continued east-northeast to Brock
Rd where more trees were snapped and one home had minor roof
damage, before lifting.

Survey summary: this tornado began in a Pecan Orchard in
western Wilcox County south of Bowen Rd and intensified
quickly with 100 mph winds. At least 100 Pecan trees were
snapped and shredded along a narrow 30 yard wide path with
essentially no damage on either side. The tornado traveled
east and weakened slightly snapping several trees. It then
destroyed a 400ft of a large Chicken house. A few more trees
were downed before the tornado lifted just east of the
intersection of Bowen Rd and Highway 159.


Ef scale: the Enhanced Fujita scale classifies tornadoes into
the following categories.

EF0... weak... ... 65 to 85 mph
EF1... weak... ... 86 to 110 mph
EF2... strong... .111 to 135 mph
EF3... strong... .136 to 165 mph
EF4... violent... 166 to 200mph
EF5... violent... >200mph
