... August climate highlights...

*severe thunderstorms bring record rainfall to parts of central and
south-central Kansas on the 5th as well as the 22nd and 23rd.

*A strong cold front produces temperatures much below normal from
the 19th to the 25th... culminating in record low temperatures on
the 24th and 25th.

August was highlighted by two periods of intense thunderstorms that
produced torrential rains and exceptionally cool weather.

The first round of intense thunderstorms... a few that were severe...
arrived early in the morning on the 5th. Damaging winds that reached
around 60 mph first hit parts of central Kansas then moved briskly
southeast... reaching parts of south-central Kansas toward daybreak
and southeast Kansas by mid-morning.

Power lines were downed in Hesston and North Newton but very heavy
rains also occurred and caused flooding. In Salina... a few cars were
stalled while street flooding occurred in Lyons and east Wichita.
It's likely areas of flooding also occurred in other parts of
central Kansas... especially Russell and Marion counties... where 3 to
5 inches were reported.

The second round of intense thunderstorms arrived central Kansas
late in the evening on the 22nd. The complex spread southeast across
much of south-central and eastern Kansas later that night and early
the following morning. The thunderstorms produced hail around 1 inch
in diameter... 60 to 70 mph winds... and torrential rains.

The greatest rainfall occurred in and around Wichita... where several
areas were soaked by 2 to 4 inches. Wichita set a daily rainfall
record on the 23rd when 2.50 inches was measured at eisenhower
National Airport. This broke the previous record of 1.96 inches set
10 years earlier in 2005.

The torrential rain-producing severe thunderstorms that occurred
from the night of the 22nd to early morning on the 23rd occurred
along a strong cold front that surged southeast during the night.
Exceptionally cool weather spread across the region. In fact...
temperatures for most of the period from the 19th to the 25th were 8
to 13 degrees below normal... culminating in daily record lows being
set or tied on the 24th and 25th.

The following are the record low temperatures that were set or tied
on the 24th and 25th:

August 24th: previous record russell: 47 54 in 1957
chanute: 54 54 in 1945

August 25th: chanute: 52 52 in 1958 wichita: 54 54 in 1910

In Wichita... this August was the 11th wettest on record.
