Flash Flood Watch

Statement as of 3:14 PM MDT on May 03, 2015

Expires 8:00 PM EDT on May 05, 2015

... Flash Flood Watch in effect from Monday afternoon through Tuesday

The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a

* Flash Flood Watch for a portion of north and central New
Mexico... including the following areas... Chaves County
plains... Curry County... De Baca County and Roosevelt County.

* From Monday afternoon through Tuesday afternoon

* an upper level low pressure system will approach slowly from
over Southern California and Arizona on Monday and pass over New
Mexico on Tuesday. At the same time... moisture from the Gulf of
Mexico will move north and west into the eastern plains of New
Mexico... setting the stage for thunderstorms. The atmosphere
will destabilize early Monday and continue to be unstable
through late Tuesday... with multiple rounds of thunderstorms
expected. The main focus area will be over portions of the east
central and southeast plains... south of Interstate 40... where
rainfall amounts around two inches will be common. Spotty storm
total amounts may reach up to near four inches between Monday
afternoon and Tuesday afternoon.

* Locations most vulnerable to flash flooding will include poor
drainage areas... areas around The Caprock Escarpment and the
cities of Roswell... Fort Sumner... Portales and Clovis.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead to
flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.
Monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should flash
flood warnings be issued.

Special Statement

Statement as of 4:13 AM MDT on May 03, 2015

Expires 6:00 PM EDT on May 03, 2015

... An active and wet weather pattern to develop across northern and
central New Mexico Monday through Tuesday night...

A slow moving storm system will approach New Mexico from the west on
Monday and track over the state Monday night through Tuesday night.
At the same time... moist low level easterly winds will develop over
the eastern plains. This will lead to widespread showers and
thunderstorms for the region... starting Monday and persisting
through Tuesday night.

Heavy rainfall from repeated bouts of showers and storms could
result in potential for at least localized flooding over the eastern
plains Monday night through Tuesday... and especially from the
Pecos Valley eastward to the Texas border. In addition... this same
area will see the possibility for a few strong to severe
thunderstorms both Monday and Tuesday with large hail and damaging
winds. In particular... there is a slight risk for severe storms to
be focused over De Baca... Chaves... Roosevelt and Curry counties
Monday and Tuesday afternoon and evening.

From the Rio Grande Valley westward... showers and storms will be
widespread... but any heavy rainfall is expected to be more
localized. While high temperatures overall will fall to below
average values for early may... it will not be cold enough for snow
to accumulate... except perhaps for the very highest elevations of the
region during the late night hours.

A drier and windier trend is expected to begin Wednesday and last
into the upcoming weekend.

Motorists and residents should be watchful for fast flowing water in
low water crossings and normally dry arroyos. Never attempt to cross
fast flowing water of unknown depth. Remember... turn around... Don/T
