Flash Flood Watch, Areal Flood Advisory

Statement as of 11:51 PM MDT on July 28, 2014

Expires 4:15 AM EDT on July 29, 2014

... Flash Flood Watch in effect until 6 am MDT Tuesday...

The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has expanded the

* Flash Flood Watch to include a portion of north and central New
Mexico... including the following areas... Central Highlands...
Chaves County plains... Curry County... De Baca County... eastern
Lincoln County... Estancia valley... Guadalupe County... Quay
County... Roosevelt County... Sandia/Manzano Mountains... south
Central Highlands and southwest Chaves County.

* Until 6 am MDT Tuesday

* an upper level disturbance will shift slowly eastward across
northern New Mexico triggering showers and thunderstorms from
the Central Mountain chain eastward for the remainder of
tonight. With weak steering flow aloft and a very moist airmass
in place... slow moving thunderstorms will be capable of
producing very heavy rain and flash flooding.

* Locations where the ground is already saturated from recent
rainfall will be favored for flash flooding for the remainder
tonight. Other vulnerable locations will include steep
terrain... urban areas and burn scars. Keep a watchful eye on
arroyos and small streams... and stay out of flooded low water
crossings. Monitor the latest forecasts closely and be prepared
to take immediate action if a warning or advisory is issued.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead to
flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.
Monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should flash
flood warnings be issued.

1145 PM MDT Mon Jul 28 2014

The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued an

* Arroyo and Small Stream Flood Advisory for...
extreme southeastern Lincoln County in central New Mexico
central Chaves County in southeast New Mexico

* until 345 am MDT

* at 1142 PM MDT National Weather Service Doppler radar indicated
slow moving thunderstorms producing heavy rainfall from far
southwest Chaves County eastward toward Dexter and Hagerman.
This activity is capable of producing rainfall at rates between
1 and 1.5 inches per hour. This heavy rain will impact drainages
traveling eastward toward the Pecos River... including Rio Felix
and Rio Penasco. Heavy rain will also impact portions of Highway
82... Highway 13... and 285.

* Strong flows and high water levels are expected in arroyos... small
streams and over low water crossings. Rapid runoff can also be
expected immediately over and downstream from wildfire burn scars.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Both localized and distant heavy rainfall will create dangerous flows
in arroyos and over low water crossings. Do not attempt to drive
through these waters. Water in arroyos may travel many miles and take
hours to reach your location from upstream rain areas.

Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the
roadway. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross
safely.
