Public Information Statement

... National hurricane preparedness week is from may 24 to may 30...

Please join the National Weather Service forecast office in Upton
New York in observing National hurricane preparedness week.

Todays topic covers the forecast process.

Part of the mission of the National weather services National
Hurricane Center is to save lives and protect property by issuing
outlooks... watches... warnings... forecasts and analyses of hazardous
weather conditions in the tropics.

Tropical weather outlooks are issued four times a day during
hurricane season. They describe the state of the
tropics... discussing areas of disturbed weather and their potential
for development over the next 5 days.

Tropical cyclone public advisories describe tropical storms and
hurricanes and their expected hazards. The National Hurricane
Center usually issues them every six hours. However... they are
issued more frequently when watches or warnings are in effect or
when there are significant changes in warnings or in the tropical
cyclone. The advisories are broadcast over NOAA all hazards weather
radio.

Hurricane local statements are issued by your local National Weather
Service office when a tropical storm or Hurricane Watch or warning
has been issued for any part of the local area by the National
Hurricane Center. They contain detailed information about present
and anticipated storm impacts. Know if you are in an evacuation zone
and be prepared to evacuate.

A tropical storm watch is issued when sustained winds of 39 to 73
mph are possible within 48 hours. A Hurricane Watch is issued when
sustained winds of at least 74 mph are possible within the specified
coastal area. Because hurricane preparedness activities become
difficult once winds reach tropical storm force... the Hurricane
Watch is issued 48 hours in advance of the anticipated onset of
tropical storm force winds. This is the time to take action to
protect your family and property and evacuate if directed to by
local officials.

A Tropical Storm Warning is issued when sustained winds of 39 to 73
mph are expected within 36 hours. A Hurricane Warning is issued when
sustained winds of at least 74 mph are expected within the specified
coastal area. Because hurricane preparedness activities become
difficult once winds reach tropical storm force... the Hurricane
Warning is issued 36 hours in advance of the anticipated onset of
tropical storm force winds. This is the time to complete all storm
preparations and evacuate if directed to by local officials.

Be prepared this hurricane season... and visit hurricanes.Gov and
