Areal Flood Advisory, Flash Flood Watch

Statement as of 12:50 PM AST on August 22, 2014

Expires 8:00 AM EDT on August 23, 2014

The National Weather Service in San Juan has issued an

* Urban and Small Stream Flood Advisory
for the following municipalities...

in Puerto Rico
Barranquitas... Ciales... Coamo... Corozal... Florida... Jayuya...
Manati... Morovis... Naranjito... Orocovis... Ponce... Vega Alta...
Villalba... Aibonito... Dorado... Toa Alta... Toa Baja and Vega Baja

* until 345 PM AST

* at 1245 PM AST... Doppler radar indicated numerous showers and
isolated thunderstorms moving across the advisory area. These areas
of showers and thunderstorms have the capability of producing
moderate to heavy rainfall which will lead to rapid rises on small
streams and creeks as well as urban flooding.

Most flood deaths occur in automobiles. Never drive your vehicle into
areas where the water covers the roadway. Flood waters are usually
deeper than they appear. Just one foot of flowing water is powerful
enough to sweep vehicles off the Road. When encountering flooded
roads make the smart choice... turn around... dont drown.

... Flash Flood Watch remains in effect through Saturday morning...

The Flash Flood Watch continues for

* all Puerto Rico... Culebra... Vieques and U.S. Virgin Island

* through Saturday morning

* abundant tropical moisture... associated with a strong tropical
wave will continue to move across the local islands through late
tonight. Showers with thunderstorms will continue to spread
across the region this morning through at least tonight. Periodic
bursts of heavy rainfall are expected across the islands
accompanying the tropical wave. Rainfall totals between 4 and 6
inches with locally higher amounts in mountainous terrain are
likely during this event. Therefore... there is a high potential
for urban and flash flooding through at least Saturday morning.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions are favorable for heavy
rain across the watch area... which may lead to flooding. If you are
in the watch area... check your preparedness requirements...
especially if you have interests along area rivers. Keep informed...
and be ready for quick action if flooding is observed or if a Flash
Flood Warning is issued.

People in the watch area should continue to be aware of the
possibility for heavy rainfall. Avoid low lying areas... and be
careful when approaching Highway dips and underpasses. The heavy
rain could also cause mudslides and rock slides in areas of steep
terrain.

Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio... local TV... radio or your cable
television provider for later statements and possible warnings.
