Special Statement

Statement as of 5:48 AM MST on December 07, 2016

Expires 6:00 PM EST on December 07, 2016

... Arctic air arrives tonight along with wintry precipitation...

A blast of Arctic air will send temperatures plunging this evening.
Stiff northerly winds of 15 to 25 mph will drop wind chills into
the teens and 20s behind the front. By Thursday morning, low
temperatures will range from the upper teens in northern Lea
County to around 30 near Fort Stockton and 40 to 45 along the Rio
Grande.

As cold, northeast upslope winds push into The Trans Pecos after
midnight, an upper disturbance will approach and could develop a
wintry mix of freezing rain, snow, sleet, and rain along the
Interstate 10 corridor and higher terrain of the Davis Mountains
northward into the Permian Basin and southeast New Mexico. The
southern extent of the frozen precipitation will be along a line
extending from roughly Van Horn to Marfa to alpine to Sheffield.
Although precipitation amounts are expected to be light, dangerous
travel conditions could exist in these areas late Wednesday night
into Thursday as high temperatures are expected to stay in the 30s
except along the Rio Grande. Friday morning will be even colder,
so prepare your plants, pipes, pets, and vehicles for cold
weather. Keep abreast of the latest weather forecasts and
information for possible changes.
