Beach Hazard Statement, Coastal Flood Statement, High Surf Advisory

Statement as of 4:31 AM EDT on September 26, 2017

Expires 7:00 PM EDT on September 27, 2017

... Beach hazards statement in effect through this evening...
... High surf advisory remains in effect until 7 PM EDT Wednesday...

* location... Oceanside and along the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia
Beach.

* Timing... through Wednesday... the most likely time for strong rip
currents is a couple hours on either side of low tide.

* Coastal flood impacts... shallow flooding is possible within 2
hours of high tide this afternoon.

* Shoreline impacts... breaking waves will result in beach erosion
with only minor damage possible to dune structures.

* Surf or rip current risk... large nearshore waves of 4 to 8 feet
today will cause dangerous rip currents. Waves building to 9 to
15 feet tonight through Wednesday will create dangerous surf
for anyone entering the water, and some minor beach erosion.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A beach hazards statement is issued when threats such as rip
currents... longshore currents... sneaker waves and other hazards
create life-threatening conditions in the surf zone. Caution should
be used when in or near the water.

A high surf advisory means that high surf will affect beaches in the
advisory area... producing localized beach erosion and dangerous
swimming conditions.
