Public Information Statement

Statement as of 12:09 PM PDT on April 17, 2014

It was a very wet March for much of Washington state... and for
some... this was the wettest March on record. Nearly everyone
exceeded the normal rainfall for the month... and some received more
than double. The March rainfall also helped improve the water year
values for the state with some areas now near normal... although most
still remain below normal.

In western Washington... the monthly percentage of normal for
precipitation ranged from 159 percent in the Olympics to 216 percent
in the western foothills of the Cascades. The greatest amount of
precipitation at the climate stations for the mountains... coast...
and interior lowlands was 23.24 inches at Paradise Ranger station on
the west slopes of the Cascades... 18.97 inches at Clearwater... and
19.10 inches at Grays River in the southwest interior.

For eastern Washington... the percentage of normal for precipitation
ranged from 111 percent in the Okanogan region to 183 percent in the
east slopes of the Cascades. The greatest amount of precipitation at
climate stations for the mountains and lowlands was 11.07 inches at
Mount Adams Ranger station on the east slopes of the Cascades... and
5.20 inches at Newport in the northeast region.

The outlook for April and beyond... for the next two weeks the
outlook is for below normal precipitation for all of Washington. The
monthly outlook for April is calling for equal chances of
normal... above... or below normal precipitation for the state. The
three month outlook from April to June calls for below normal
precipitation for the western half of the state... with equal chances
of normal... above... or below normal precipitation for the eastern
half.

The Table below gives precipitation figures as a percent of normal
for regions of Washington. The current water year began 1 October
