High Surf Advisory, Coastal Flood Watch

Statement as of 1:31 PM PST on December 18, 2014

Expires 7:00 PM EST on December 20, 2014

... High surf advisory in effect from 10 am Friday to 6 am PST
Saturday...
... Coastal Flood Watch in effect from Saturday morning through
Saturday afternoon...

The National Weather Service in Seattle has issued a high surf
advisory... which is in effect from 10 am Friday to 6 am PST
Saturday. A coastal Flood Watch has also been issued. This
coastal Flood Watch is in effect from Saturday morning through
Saturday afternoon.

* Timing... an extensive area of high waves that is being generated
well offshore will move onto the Washington coast as an
energetic swell starting midday Friday and continuing through
Saturday. The high swell may combine with a high tide on
Saturday to produce some coastal flooding midday
Saturday... around the time of high tide.

* Impacts... high surf will make it is extremely dangerous to fish
or observe waves from rocks Friday afternoon through Saturday.
Significant wave run up on beaches is likely. Potential
significant beach erosion is possible. Low lying coastal
communities such as Westport... Ocean Shores and La Push may see
some flooding around the Saturday high tide.

* Time of high tide... around 11 am PST Saturday on the central and
North Washington coast.

* Predicted tide... at Neah Bay the predicted high tide is around
10.5 feet. The tide table prediction is around 9.2 feet. Tidal
anomalies will likely be higher than this due to breaking wave
action and tidal anomalies will be similar along the entire
coastline of north and central Washington.

* Seas... 23 to 25 feet Friday afternoon and Friday night and 20 to
22 feet on Saturday.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A high surf advisory means that high surf will affect beaches in
the advisory area... producing rip currents and localized beach
erosion.

A coastal Flood Watch means flooding or beach erosion will occur
if weather conditions develop as predicted. Residents and local
officials should monitor the situation closely and be prepared to
take appropriate action if a warning is issued.
